OUR SPECIALTIESProblems We’re Experts On.
Many of the clients who find their way to us are high-functioning, connected people who have hit a wall. You might recognize yourself or your relationship here:
-
Desire Discrepancy occurs when one partner is initiating physical intimacy more than the other. This can leave one partner feeling inadequate and the other feeling rejected. Majority of the time, this concern is not as simple as one partner has lost attraction or sexual desire for their partner. Instead, sex has become a place of expectation and performance rather than pleasure and exploration.
Our therapists at Align Houston Therapy help couples work through this issue by:
Understanding the Patterns Behind Sexual Disconnection
Understanding Each Others Desire and How They Differ
Rediscovering What Feels Good To You
Creating a More Fun and Playful Sex Life
We help couples understand their differences so that they may move closer together. Desire discrepancy is a normal experience for many couples, and often occurs in longer term relationships. Sex can be fun, playful, safe and comfortable. Let us help get you there!
-
Many clients find themselves in counseling wondering why they do not desire sex in the same way they used to or because they find themselves avoiding intimacy all together.
This is a common experience as sexual desire naturally fluctuates throughout the lifespan. Sometimes, this can be connected to stress, hormonal shifts, medications, pain, etc. Other times it can be due to relational stress, unresolved hurt, expectation around sex, or the expectation that desire should always occur spontaneously.
Our therapists at Align Houston Therapy help LGBTQ+ couples navigate challenges such as:
Understand What May Be Affecting Your Desire
Explore How You Experience Desire
Reduce Pressure and Reconnect with Pleasure
Create a Fulfilling Sexual Life
Our approach helps clients explore what feels safe and pleasurable physically and emotionally so that this may be communicated with sexual partners. You are not broken and you are not alone if you are experiencing low desire. In sex therapy, we help you get curious about your desire without judgement. The goal is not to make you want sex more, but to help you understand yourself so that you can reconnect with your needs.
-
You've tried to "think" your way out of these patterns before, but you keep ending up in the same emotional place. Relationship trauma and anxiety can leave you feeling stuck in cycles of fear, overthinking, mistrust, or emotional overwhelm. With the help of a trained therapist, you will learn to understand patterns, build resilience, strengthen relationships, and reclaim your sense of emotional safety.
-

Our approach helps couples better understand themselves and each other, navigate differences with greater confidence, and develop practical tools for handling challenges as a team. MODALITIES That WorkOur approach
We use research-backed methods designed specifically for couples and individuals, including:
The Intake Process: Our clinicians will use the first few sessions to get a clear understanding of your history using a basic Intake Questionnaire of your relational and familial history. If you are coming in with a sexual related concern, your clinician will also conduct a Sexual History Questionnaire. Clinicians understand that this can be very private and sensitive information to share. You are welcome to share as much or as little information as you feel comfortable with. Although, our Sexual History Questionnaire gives us more information, so that we can better address your goals and needs.
CBT- Sex Therapy: Thoughts, emotions, and experiences shape how we experience sex. CBT helps you understand how these patterns develop and how they impact sexual experiences. Together we help explore unhelpful beliefs and expectations around sex, recognize unhelpful patterns, and develop new ways of responding to anxiety and distress within sex. CBT helps provide reflection and practical tools so that you can walk away with more confidence, and can approach intimacy with greater flexibility and curiosity.
Somatic Therapy: Our bodies play an important role in how we experience sex, intimacy, and pleasure. Stress, anxiety, and past traumatic experiences can impact how we experience sex. Somatic therapy works to build the mind-body connection so that you can notice physical sensations, recognize your body’s responses, and develop a greater sense of safety in your body. This is especially important as the body must feel safe in order to experience pleasure. We work to help you feel more present, understand your body’s cues, and develop a more comfortable and connected relationship with your sexuality.
Communication skill-building: Communication-skill building focuses on helping partners express their needs, listen to understand, and navigate difficult conversations more effectively. This is done by practicing active listening, strengthening emotional expression, and developing healthier ways to communicate through conflict and disconnection. It is important to also feel comfortable discussing sex and what aspects of your sex life are working and not working. We aim to increase comfort around sexual conversations, so your partner and you may work towards a fulfilling sex life together.
Conflict resolution techniques: Conflict resolution focuses on helping partners navigate disagreements in ways that promote understanding rather than disconnection. This is done by identifying underlying needs, de-escalating tension, finding common ground, and developing collaborative strategies to resolve conflict constructively.
Trauma-Informed Approach: A trauma-informed approach recognizes how past experiences can shape emotional responses, relationship patterns, and feelings of safety especially within the sexual space. We aim to build trust, understand trauma-related triggers, and develop strategies that promote emotional regulation, secure connection, and healing within your body.
Common concerns
-
That's actually more common than you'd think. Individual therapy can help you understand your patterns and decide on your next steps. Sometimes one partner's commitment opens the door.
-
No. A skilled couples therapist remains neutral and focused on the health of the relationship itself, not on who's "right" or "wrong."
-
Actually, the opposite. Seeking help is a sign of strength and commitment. Many of the strongest, most connected couples use therapy as a tool for growth.
-
The short answer is of course not. We completely understand questioning your relationship. Sometimes the answer is separation and our job is not to force you to stay. Our job is to provide you with clarity and confidence in whatever decision you make next.
-
Every situation differs. The good thing is all of our couples’ therapists are trained in tracking progress through treatment plans and will update you on your progress regularly.
